Moneyline, spread and totals explained

Most PickBot picks use one of three bet types. All examples below are fictional and are not recommendations.

Moneyline (ML)

You pick the team to win the game.

Example: "Hawks ML" means the Hawks win the game.

Spread

You pick a team with a points handicap.

  • Minus (-): the favorite. "Hawks -3.5" wins if the Hawks win by 4 or more.

  • Plus (+): the underdog. "Owls +3.5" wins if the Owls win, or lose by 3 or fewer.

In baseball this is often called the run line (for example +1.5), and in hockey the puck line.

Totals (over/under)

You pick whether the combined score of both teams goes over or under a number.

  • "O52.5" means over 52.5 total points.

  • "U9.5" means under 9.5 total runs.

A team total works the same way for one team's score only.

Why half points?

A line like 52.5 cannot finish exactly level, so the bet can't push. With a whole number, an exact landing can be a push. See Wins, losses, pushes and voids (and pick vs. result messages).
